How to Brighten Dull Skin Quickly

Each day, we’re constantly bombarded with glossy magazine covers of actresses and models with glowing skin. While we do understand that Photoshop plays a role in their bright, clear complexion, it’s hard to feel good about yourself when your own skin looks dull and tired. There are many reasons why your complexion isn’t exactly as luminescent as you’d like—poor sleep, dry skin, clogged pores—but, fortunately, we have plenty of dull skin remedies for you to try.

Problem: You’re dehydrated.

If you’re dehydrated, your skin will feel just as thirsty as you do. Unfortunately, chugging a glass of water isn’t going to be enough to cure your dull complexion. When the skin below the surface—called the dermis—starts to dehydrate, it deflates and thins out your skin.

Solution: Moisturize

It’s going to take more than your regular moisturizer to make a noticeable difference in your complexion if your skin looks dull. Instead, try a deeply hydrating serum at night and follow it up with a moisturizer that contains emollients, such as dimethicone or cetyl alcohol. These emollients create an ultra-thin transparent layer of protection on top of your skin, which allows dry skin cells to lay flatter and smoother.

Problem: You never take your makeup off.

Look, we get it: nobody likes taking off their makeup before bed. At the end of a long day, taking off your makeup feels like nothing more than a tedious chore. But your skin will thank you in the morning! Leaving product on your skin for too long clogs your pores, leading to acne, blackheads, and a dull complexion.

Solution: Take your makeup off!

It seems like a very easy solution, but it’s tough to get in the habit of taking off your makeup before bed if this is a chronic problem. Instead, try this: invest in a pack (or a family sized box) of makeup wipes. On nights when you simply can’t imagine splashing water on your face or breaking out your face wash, makeup removing wipes will help wipe away the day’s grime.

Problem: You’re exhausted.

One of the most common culprits behind dry, dull skin is lack of good sleep. The average adult needs about 7 to 9 hours of restful sleep a night to feel refreshed and rejuvenated in the morning. If you’re constantly struggling to get up in the morning, you may start to notice dark bags under your eyes, brain fog, troubles concentrating, or a dull complexion. This happens because your skin doesn’t have a chance to repair itself while you sleep.

Solution: Go to bed earlier.

Even an extra 30 minutes of sleep can help your skin recharge. If you struggle with getting to bed on time, there are a number of helpful sleep tips to combat insomnia, such as chamomile tea, relaxing noise apps, breathing techniques, and more. This will give your skin time to repair itself while you catch some extra Z’s.
