5 Things Every Freckly Person Should Know

Freckles are your friends. Some say freckles are a symbol of charm and youth, and “angel kisses” are a trademark for unconventional beauty. They are unique and quirky, and they can be adorable too! No baby is born with freckles — they are genetic, linked to the kind of melanin your body produces — and they appear after sun exposure, most often on people with fair complexions.

If you have freckles, you know “connect the dots” has a completely different meaning for you, as you or your family or friends has probably tried to play that game on your skin or simply count how many freckles you have. And despite the plethora of comments, nicknames and daily comments you might endure because of your freckles, we hope you love them and can’t get enough of them!

However, when it comes to beauty and fashion, we know that freckles can sometimes feel like a pain. And especially when it comes to a flawless face, freckles might leave you feeling dotty! So here are some tips for making the most out of your freckles.

1. Sunscreen — Always

More than likely, you don’t tan; you freckle. So even if it’s the middle of winter, you need to protect those freckles. If you’re going to be outside for more than even just a few minutes, put sunscreen on your arms, legs and other exposed body parts. And wear sunscreen on your face and neck every single day. In addition to the sunblock you apply, buy skincare products and makeup that contain addition sunscreen. Finally, you’ll also need to reapply sunscreen more often than most, so it’s great to always have a tube on hand (or in your purse).

2. Match Foundation to the Lightest Part of Your Face

Start with an illuminating primer to even things out and brighten up your complexion, and then use a foundation that matches your skin tone—not your freckles.

3. Conceal Sparingly and Strategically

Trying to hide blemishes but not your freckles is a real, everyday struggle. Aim for a natural look, pinpointing concealer and then gently buffing it out to avoid major discoloration on certain areas your face.

4. Stick to Lightweight Liquids and Creams

When applying makeup, you probably have two moods when it comes to your freckles: hide them all or don’t hide any of them. But we say show them off with pride! Try a tinted moisturizer, BB cream or CC cream instead of a thick or heavy foundation. Anything with too much coverage can cause a gray cast, or make it look like your face doesn’t match your neck, so be careful not to blanket your face in foundation.

5. Embrace Bronzer and Blush

A subtle, sun-kissed glow amplifies freckles. Warmer colors, like corals and peaches, are ideal since they won’t make freckles look too ashy.
