When most people in Houston complain about their hair, it’s often related to the humidity — whether it’s frizz or falling flat. But when the humidity level is lower in the winter, it can create a new set of problems for your hair.
The good news is there’s a way to combat dry hair, and the answers are likely in your refrigerator or kitchen pantry. A homemade hair mask made with natural ingredients can restore moisture, vibrancy and shine in your dry winter locks. Making a mask is simple to do with just a few ingredients, and the benefits are instantaneous.
Slather on These Single Ingredients
The simplest homemade hair masks contain just one ingredient.
First, try coconut oil. Take a quarter of a cup of warmed coconut oil (so that it becomes a liquid) and apply it to wet or dry hair. You’ll want to leave it in for at least an hour, so consider doing this while you take an extra-long bath or wrap your hair up in a shower cap or towel during this time. Just be careful if you do this overnight, as coconut oil will stain clothing and sheets. When you’re done, simply rinse out your hair. (And again, use caution if rinsing it out in the shower, as the oil can make the shower slippery.)
Extra Virgin Olive Oil is also a great natural conditioner for treating dry hair. By locking in moisture and preventing scalp dryness, it produces soft and shiny hair while also preventing breakage, split ends and flyaway strands.
Honey is another great single ingredient for retaining moisture in your hair because it acts as a natural emollient and humectant and sucks moisture into the hair.
Egg Yolk & Avocado
Eggs are also great for your hair, as they are naturally moisturizing and restorative. Mix 2 egg yolks with half an avocado for a make-it-shine homemade hair mask. Mix ingredients well and apply to wet or dry hair for 15-20 minutes before rinsing and washing hair.
Honey, Yogurt & Olive Oil
Honey mixed with a little yogurt and olive oil will help get your hair back in shape. Use 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of olive oil and ¼ cup of plain yogurt. Apply to damp hair and let it sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing and washing hair.
Egg Yolk, Honey & Coconut Oil
This is a great treatment for hair abused by high-heat styling tools or harsh chemical treatments, hair gets damaged in all sorts of ways. To restore moisture, protein and shine, combine 1 egg yolk, 1 tablespoon of honey and 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. Apply to wet or dry hair and let it set for 30 minutes before washing and conditioning as normal.
Greek Yogurt, Apple Cider Vinegar & Honey
Heal dry, broken hair with this enriching mask that adds a protein boost while sealing in moisture. Combine 1 cup yogurt, 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon of honey. Apply from roots to tips and set for 15 minutes before rinsing with water.
