• Oily hair needs purifying shampoos fortified with added proteins
• If you color your hair, you need antioxidants and UV protection. Look for a shampoo made specifically for color- or chemically-treated hair. And avoid shampoos with added parabens and sulfates.

Next, you want to consider the ingredients of the shampoo you are considering. Right now, there’s a lot of talk about sulfate-free shampoos. Back in the ’70s, some shampoos contained ethanolamine lauryl sulfates that released carcinogenic nitrosamines that caused major health risks. The FDA and other regulatory bodies across the world have determined sulfates currently in shampoos are safe for your health, but they can still have harsh effects on your hair and strip away your color and essential oils naturally found in hair.
